"Enthusiasm, ornament and magnificence" - Georg Muffat (c.1653-1704)
We are a unique group of four period instrument specialists, united by our dedication to the historically informed practises of 17th and 18th century music. Having studied together at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, The Netherlands, we are bringing to Australian audiences leading practises and professional expertise from the most dynamic baroque ensembles of Europe.
We are proud to offer a genuine and moving concert experience. Our performances are purposefully intimate so as to offer the chance to get up close and personal with the musicians. We view historical performance as a means to enhance the vitality and energy inherent in this music that we love; it allows us to express the gamut of dramatic emotions that speak just as much to us now, as they did in the past.
As well as presenting four varied concert programs, we are thrilled to be involved in educational programs with the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Historical Performance Department, Abbotsleigh School for Girls and tailored programs for school children and young adults in NSW.
Georg Muffat (c.1653-1704), our namesake, was a composer, a professor of rhetoric and a traveller. The self-proclaimed German sought to unite different styles and musical tastes not only to "Make perfection in music" but to promote peace amongst the quarrelling nations of Europe. In the spirit of Muffat, our goal is to bring together communities, lovers of music and also those who are new to this style. We believe that there is something in this music for everyone; it has the power to entertain and refresh the spirit!
